Things I've Seen (this summer)

1. The moon-round head of an owl, white next to her ruffled-down, brown body in the blue twilight sky of Nantucket.
2. A kitchen countertop crowded with bowls of fresh-picked tomatoes and glasses of herbs with their stems in water.
3. A spider clinging to the living room ceiling, its eight legs doubled by their spindly shadows.
4. The deep brown of my lover's eyes as he contemplates change.
5. Beach mosquitoes bouncing against the window of a Jeep, trying to get inside.
6. Yellow pollen from bouquets of farmers' market flowers dusting the mahogany wood of my desk.
7. The New York City coastline from the window of an airplane.
8. A tall, skinny man in lace-trimmed red leggings and red high heels, marching down the street in Montpelier, Vermont, playing a trumpet in the Fourth of July parade.
9. The Milky Way.
10. Kool-Aid, as sweet as it was bright red, in a blue-topped plastic pitcher.

As I play with photography and paint and incorporate more of the senses into my writing, I pay more conscious attention to the physical world. About a month ago I did a little "things I've seen this month" post. A few people liked the idea of using it as a prompt. I invite you to share things you've seen this week in the comments or on your blog (and link to it in the comments). Maybe something on your list  (or on someone else's) will spark an idea for a longer piece of writing. If so, please feel free to share that, too.

1. Weeds just as pretty as the flowers we call plants.
2. Homemade strawberry muffins on a white plate atop my blue kitchen counter.
3. My angry reflection in the bedroom mirror.
4. Neat rows of typed words, little black symbols on white paper.
5. Stratospheres of milky white made by cooled melted wax in a blue-striped glass votive.
6. Graffiti in my quiet little town.
7. A brown-and-white stuffed cat toy in the shape of a squirrel perched on the bottom step.
8. The beam of a flashlight.
9. My pink yoga mat.
10. Soapy water flowing over the side of the basement's clogged utility sink.

Things I've Seen This Month

1. A miniscule apple-green inchworm on the warm mahogany wood of my desk.

2. The slow leak of light at dawn on a cloudy day, after pulling an all-nighter.

3. A pink nose and kitty whiskers on my pillow and in my face.

4. A blue and grey sky, as moody and changeable as the sea.

5. Fuzz on the couches and tumbleweed furballs in the corner of the dining room.

6. A kitchen sink full of dirty dishes.

7. Tulips and lilacs still in bloom on the other side of town.

8. A black and white cat chasing a grey bunny through the green grass in the dark twilight blue.

9. A pint of raspberries.

10. A good friend's name on caller ID.
